Families in Global Transition Conference 2016 will take place for the first time ever in Holland!

Maybe you have heard the good news: the Families in Global Transition (FIGT) Conference will take place in the Netherlands next year. The conference is from the 10th of March to the 12th of March 2016 in Amsterdam. For the past 2 years I have been wanting to attend this conference but the conference was in Washington, USA. I had to take days off from work, fly to America and I just was not able to arrange it. I am so excited that the conference has moved to Europe, and even better it has moved to the Netherlands, Amsterdam to be exact. Now I can take the train and attend! If you want to attend the conference and save money make sure you register before 4th January 2016.

By the way the theme of the conference is "Moving Across Cultures: Bringing Empathy and Expertise to the Evolving Global Family". I like the word empathy.

What does empathy do according to the Greater Good Science Center? Empathy:

• reduces prejudice and racism

• reduces bullying

• promotes heroic acts

• fights inequality

• is good for healthcare

• cuts against self-interest, people with empathy are more likely to help people in need

Wow that sounds very promising! Then add all the expertise in too and it is a recipe for success.I have heard that the author of the book "Global Mom" Melissa Dalton-Bradford will be one of the keynote speakers. She is a mother of 4, a writer of books, essays, poetry and a blog. As a family they have lived in 10 countries. She has also written the book "On loss & Living Onward", I think I have to read one of her books before the conference. You can see the trailer of the book "Global Mom" here.

Good things seem to happen at FIGT conferences. Killian Kröll, the current chair of the FIGT board grew up as a third culture kid (TCK). He was unaware of the impact of his upbringing. During a seminar he first heard the term TCK. That moment changed his life and he found his tribe. 2011 was the first FIGT conference he attended and then he was really sure that he had found his tribe. Just in case you have not heard of Families in Global Transitions, you can visit the FIGT website for more information. The first FIGT conference was held in 1998 and Ruth van Reken the coauthor of the book "Third Culture Kids Growing up Among Worlds" was one of the initiators.

Third Culture Kid: Proud to be Dutch

On Facebook recently a friend of mine, who grew up as a third culture kid too posted this video. She added the text "Proud to be Dutch". I must say I grew up in Africa with the same feeling, I was proud that I came from Holland (or the Netherlands). If you don't know why then you need to see this short film.

Hello World! The Dutch Children's Book Week 2012

I just listened to the song specially made for the Dutch Children's book week (de Kinderboekenweek 2012). It's a really great song and I would nearly like to call it a third culture kid song. The song is all about the world and all the stories of this world. One of the children sings  

"Hello neighbour, tell me your story. You come from far away, but now you are here, we are here together."

Another child sings: "hello book, with your nice stories, countries far away, new people now live in my head".

"The world is mine, the world is yours, it's ours".

"When you read you understand the people around you,
When you read you know you're not alone,
a book opens borders and let's you go into the world" 


This year the Children's Book week is all about meeting other cultures. I just love books and I love meeting people from other cultures so you can imagine that I am quite excited about this theme. The coming week many schools, bookshops, and libraries will be organizing activities around this theme. It sounds like a lot of fun! I would like to encourage all third culture kids living in the Netherlands to share their story this week. Tell other children about the adventures you had when you lived abroad. I want to encourage immigrant and refugee children to tell their stories. Let's have a time of celebrating our multicultural stories and our multicultural kids. I am grateful for all the multicultural books that have been written.

Als je in het buitenland woont dan lijken de herinneringen aan Nederland sterker te worden. Het gezellig bij de kachel zitten als het buiten guur weer is. De eerste Hollandse nieuwe van het seizoen verorberen. De kleurrijke bollenvelden in het voorjaar. De sterke geur van de hyacinten die je neusharen prikkeld. In je herinnering lijkt het allemaal mooier dan het was. Je vergeet de onenigheid tijdens het vieren van een verjaardag. Nu denk je alleen maar aan het feit dat je niet aanwezig kunt zijn op die verjaardag. Je denkt aan de verse Oranjekoek en het water loopt al in je mond. Soms kan een bepaalde geur of een plaatje opeens een golf van heimwee opwekken.

Ken je het gedicht van Hendrik Marsman "Herinnering aan Holland" geschreven in 1936? Hendrik Marsman reisde veel en woonde veelal in het buitenland (Zwitserland, maar vooral Frankrijk). Wil je meer over hem lezen? Na een verkiezing georganiseerd door Poetry International en de Wereldomroep in 1999 is het gedicht "Herinneringen" uitgeroepen tot het "Gedicht van de Eeuw". Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik het gedicht niet kende. Hendrik Marsman heeft ook een gedicht Denkend aan Holland geschreven, over dat hij soms heimwee had.

zie ik breede rivieren

traag door oneindig

laagland gaan,

rijen ondenkbaar

ijle populieren

als hooge pluimen

aan den einder staan;

en in de geweldige

ruimte verzonken

Bedankt voor het lezen van dit stukje. Bedankt voor je tijd. Meerdere mensen lezen deze blog vanuit het buitenland. Dat wardeer ik enorm. Ik wil jullie allemaal bedanken. Dit tegeltje in Delfts blauw kwam ik recent in Delft tegen. Dus bij deze.Ook zal ik nog een aantal fotos toevoegen om de herinneringen aan Nederland te voeden, ze zijn allemaal in Delft genomen. Een is in het Prinsenhof museum genomen. Vandaag kwam ik de blog tegen van Angelica. Binenkort gaat zij met haar gezin verhuizen naar het buitenland Zij heeft meerdere mooie fotos op haar blog van de dingen die zij aan Nederland gaat missen.

Expats in Nederland

Een advies van Tina Quick (auteur van "The Global Nomad's Guide to University transition") voor jongeren is dat als je naar je thuisland (bv Nederland) terug gaat: koop dan de boeken over Nederland die buitenlanders ook kopen. Je zou ook een blog kunnen lezen geschreven door een buitenlander over het leven in Nederland. Er zijn er meerdere blogs, ik doe een paar suggesties. Zo zie je Nederland door de ogen van een buitenlander en dat kan je helpen om sneller te remigreren of te integreren.

- Jo Parfitt, Become an expat writer zij woont in Nederland, is schrijfster en uitgever. Je kan ook Jo Parfitt expat's book reviews bekijken, daar staan boekrecensies van boeken die leuk zijn voor mensen die regelmatig verhuizen.
- More expat blogs

Een website voor de internationale gemeenschap in Nederland is de expatica website. Er staan o.a. ook artikelen op de site over kinderen en opvoeding.

Wisten jullie ook dat er een expat archive centre is in Den Haag? Daar verzamelen ze alles wat met het expat leven te maken heeft bv foto's, nieuwsbrieven, verhalen, enz.

Verder is het voor de expats in Nederland mogelijk om informatie te krijgen over de expat en opvoeding in het Engels bij Passionateparenting.nl. De kinderen van expats groeien in Nederland ook op in een andere cultuur.
